Thai ban aims to end ‘rent-a-womb’ tourism

Thailand’s interim parliament passed a law Feb. 19 banning foreigners from seeking surrogacy services to end a “rent-a-womb” industry that made the country a top fertility tourism destination.

Thailand was rocked by several surrogacy scandals last year, including a case in which a Japanese man fathered at least 16 babies using Thai surrogates in what local media called a “baby factory.”

“This law aims to stop Thai women’s wombs from becoming the world’s wombs,” said lawmaker Wanlop Tankananurak. (Reuters)
