Big Ben — the huge clock bell of Britain's Parliament — was set to fall silent from Aug. 21 to protect workers during a four-year restoration project.
Elizabeth Tower, which houses Big Ben and its clock, is being restored in a £29 million (¥4.15 billion) repair project.
Big Ben is scheduled to resume regular service in 2021. This will be the bell's longest period of silence since it first sounded in 1859. Parliamentary officials say they will ensure that the bell still sounds on major occasions, such as New Year's Eve. (AP)
