Huge numbers of Rohingya refugees have entered Bangladesh, fleeing recent violence in western Myanmar, the United Nations refugee agency said Sept. 5.
A UNHCR spokeswoman said about 123,000 refugees have fled since violence erupted Aug. 25 between Myanmar security forces and Rohingya insurgents. A majority of Rohingya are Muslim.
"We fled to Bangladesh to save our lives," said a Rohingya Muslim who gave only his first name, Karim, adding that the military was "burning us, killing us, setting our village on fire." (AP)
