Swaziland is changing its name to eSwatini. King Mswati III announced the new name April 19, during celebrations of the 50th anniversary of independence and his 50th birthday.
Many African countries upon independence "reverted to their ancient, native names," he said. "We no longer shall be called Swaziland from today forward."
The historic name eSwatini means "the land of the Swati (Swazi)," where the lowercase "e" means "of" or "from."
