One of Indonesia's most influential Islamic groups is urging the government to cancel the Miss World pageant scheduled for Sept. 28, because contestants would show too much skin, an official said Aug. 26.
The statement comes despite organizers earlier agreeing to have contestants wear sarongs rather than bikinis.
"We reject Indonesia being the host of Miss World," Indonesian Ulema Council chairman Shaberah said. "Exposing their bodies in a contest is against Islamic teachings." (AP)
