Taiwan's new leader walks fine line in speech

Taiwan's new independence-leaning President Tsai Ing-wen trod carefully around the thorny issue of relations with China in her inaugural address May 20, emphasizing the importance of two decades of growing exchanges without mentioning the one-China principle fundamental to Beijing.

Beijing claims Taiwan as its own territory and has long believed the island should endorse the one-China principle.

In her speech, Tsai called for Taipei and Beijing to "engage in positive dialogue." (AP)
