Strong quake strikes central Italy, spares lives

The third powerful earthquake to hit Italy in two months spared human life Oct. 30 but struck at the nation's identity, destroying many belovedlandmarks.

The magnitude 6.6 quake was the strongest to hit Italy in 36 years, but no one was killed. Nearly 8,000 people had already been evacuated from sensitive areas and fragile city centers.

The worst damage was reported in Norcia in central Italy, where two churches were destroyed, including a 14th-century church built on the traditional birthplace of St. Benedict. (AP)
