U.S. continues attack on Afghanistan; Osama bin Laden, Taliban main targets

U.S. warplanes unleashed their heaviest attacks yet on the Afghan capital of Kabul on Oct. 10.

On the fourth day of airstrikes Oct. 10, U.S. aircraft flying day-and-night raids also rocked the region around Kandahar.

The bombers also hit a Taliban garrison in the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif, where the Afghan government is locked in a struggle with the rebel Northern Alliance

The U.S. airstrikes on Afghanistan are thought to be aimed at flushing out and capturing or killing Osama bin Laden and his associates in the al-Qaeda organization

The U.S. has also targeted the ruling Taliban regime of Islamic fundamentalists, who have given shelter to bin Laden.

To date, the only confirmed civilian deaths have been four civilian security guards who were working at a demining agency in Kabul when it was struck by a cruise missile Oct. 9

The Oct. 10 attack was described as the strongest so far against Kabul, targeting a Taliban military academy, artillery units and suspected terrorist training camps. There were also reports of attacks on the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar, home of Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar.

"This is not like before. The bombing is almost constant now and much, much closer," said a resident in northern Kabul. "The planes just keep coming."

The U.S. has also been building up ground forces in Uzbekistan on Afghanistan's northern border.
