News India and Pakistan refuse to compromise

India and Pakistan continued their standoff June 5 over Kashmir that has brought the two nuclear-armed rivals to the brink of war.

In Almaty, Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee called on Pakistan to act on its pledge to crack down on Islamic militants and stop them crossing into territory on the Indian side of the boundary that divides the disputed Himalayan region.

"Our stand is clear. We want to resolve all issues through bilateral talks, including Kashmir, (but) cross-border terrorism must stop before any talks can begin," he said at a news conference.

Pakistan has already said there is no infiltration across the border and has called for independent observers, such as U.N. monitors, to be allowed to verify this.

"We refuse to accept the Indian claim of being the accusers as well as the judges. If they are the accusers, let there be somebody else to act as the judge," Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf told CNN in an interview.

Indian and Pakistani leaders attended on June 5 an Asian security summit in Almaty, the commercial capital of Kazakstan, but Russian efforts to broker a face-to-face meeting failed.
