National NewsFirst Miyake residents return homeMIYAKE ISLAND (Kyodo) - The first group of returning Miyake evacuees set foot on their island home Feb. 2, many for the first time since volcanic activity forced everyone to leave in September 2000. The 62 residents returned to Miyake amid continuing fears of volcanic gas that spews from Mount Oyama. Some had already donned the gas masks that they are obliged to carry at all times before getting off the ship. The total evacuation order, which followed an increase in volcanic activity, was formally lifted at 3 p.m. on Feb. 1. "I'm relieved now that I'm home," said Tama Tsukuba, 77, after returning to her home in the Tsuboto district. "But I'm worried about the volcanic gas. I've got to keep going and not give up, I guess." At 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 2, village officials held a moment of silence in remembrance of those who died during the 4 1/2 year relocation.
