Injured al-Zarqawi fled Iraq: Web site
|
|
AMMAN (AP) - An Islamic Web site claimed May 25 that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al-Qaeda's point man in Iraq, has fled to an unidentified "neighboring country" with two Arab doctors treating him for gunshot wounds to his lung.
There was no way to verify the authenticity of the claim, and U.S. officials have cautioned that the information may have been designed to purposefully mislead.
The statement said that al-Zarqawi was, despite his wound, "in stable condition."
The statement was unusual in that it seemed to seek sympathy for the militant and possibly may even be preparing supporters for coming bad news.
Al-Zarqawi has claimed responsibility for attacks on Iraqi civilians and security forces and kidnappings and beheadings of foreigners. He has a $25 million (¥2.7 billion) bounty on his head.
