U.S. ambassador to U.N. steps down

Unable to win Senate confirmation, controversial U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton will step down when his appointment expires in a few weeks, the White House said Dec. 4.
Bolton was known for his debating skills as well as his blunt and aggressive promotion of the Bush administration's interests around the world. But at the same time, his abrasive style alienated many people and undermined his effectiveness as a diplomat. Bolton came to the post after President George W. Bush gave him the job temporarily in August 2005, while Congress was in recess, after the Senate twice refused to nominate him. (AP)
