Tests have found that bird flu detected in chickens at a farm in Kiyotake, Miyazaki Prefecture, was the virulent H5N1 strain that may be responsible for more than 160 human deaths worldwide, the Agricultural Ministry said Jan. 16. About 4,000 chickens died at the farm. Miyazaki officials on Jan. 15 burned all the dead birds and 8,000 surviving chickens at the farm. The government is making sure the disease does not spread.
