PM humiliated by censure motion

The opposition-controlled Upper House approved a censure motion against Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, embarrassing his government before the Group of Eight summit next month.

The 131-105 vote June 11 was the first time a chamber of the Diet has approved such a motion.

The motion was driven by criticism of a hugely unpopular medical plan that raises costs for many elderly people.

The opposition hopes to force the prime minister into calling early elections, but Fukuda said he would not dissolve the Lower House. (AP)
