Nakayama quits Cabinet over gaffes

Transport minister Nariaki Nakayama resigned Sept. 28, four days after his appointment over a number of gaffes.

Nakayama said Japanese "do not like nor desire foreigners" and Japan is inward-looking and "ethnically homogenous."

A former education minister and longtime critic of Nikkyoso, Japan's biggest union of teachers and school staff, Nakayama said the organization is a "cancer" and that he would destroy it.

While Nakayama withdrew his other controversial statements, he stood by his comments against Nikkyoso.

Former administrative reform minister Kazuyoshi Kaneko succeeded Nakayama.(The Japan Times)
