Center confirms Itoham water unclean

A local public health center confirmed Oct. 27 that chloric acid in the purified underground water at an Itoham Foods factory in Kashiwa, Chiba Prefecture, exceeds the permissible level.

Water from the well is used by Itoham Foods to make ham, sausages, pizzas and other food products.

The tests came after Itoham Foods said Oct. 25 it had detected cyanogen compounds in wells at its factory.

The city of Kashiwa later said that no alarming levels of toxic cyanogen compounds were found, amid reports that the plant is near a wartime chemical weapons training facility. (The Japan Times, Kyodo News)
