Nepal to get rid of unpopular monarchy
The world's last Hindu monarchy may soon come to an end. In an agreement Dec. 23 between major political parties in Nepal and former communist rebels, Nepal will become a republic. Violence has rocked Nepal for many years. At the center of the problems has been the widely unpopular King Gyanendra.
Gyanendra became king after a 2001 massacre in which the crown prince killed 10 royals and then himself.
Gyanendra tried to strengthen his power nearly two years ago by dismissing Parliament and making himself dictator. It ended disastrously for the king. (AP)
