Billions needed to fight hunger: Ban
|
|
The United Nations announced $2.7 billion (¥284 billion) of new aid to help ease the food crisis.
But U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon warned that up to $20 billion (¥2.1 trillion) a year would be needed.
The announcement came on the second day of a summit of world leaders in Rome.
Ban also demanded a 50 percent increase in food production by 2030 to fight hunger caused by rising fuel and food prices.
Food prices have doubled in three years, causing riots in Egypt and Haiti and in many African nations. (AP)
