Hiroshima residents protect scenery

A group of residents in Hiroshima Prefecture on Oct. 1 won a lawsuit against a public works project they said would spoil the scenery of a fishermen's district known for its well-preserved historical buildings and facilities.

It is the first court ruling to block a public works plan for the sake of local scenery.

The Hiroshima District Court issued an injunction to suspend a land reclamation license for the bridge project, which was deemed a threat to the Tomonoura district in Fukuyama City. The area forms a core part of a national park that inspired an ancient poet and Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki.

"The scenery of Tomonoura is in the interests of the public and can be considered an asset for the Japanese people," the ruling said. (Kyodo News)
