World NewsWashington ushers in economic changeMoving with lightning speed, the Democratic-controlled U.S. Congress and White House agreed Feb. 11 on a compromise $790 billion (¥72 trillion) economic stimulus bill designed to create millions of jobs in a nation reeling from recession. Obama, who had campaigned energetically for the legislation, welcomed the agreement in a written statement that said it would "save or create more than 3.5 million jobs and get our economy back on track." A day earlier, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner outlined how his highly awaited overhaul of the rescue program would leverage more than $2 trillion (¥197 trillion) for the banking system and impose stricter accountability standards on banks and their executives.
