Hiroshima pianist gets Geneva first
|

Pianist Mami Hagiwara on Nov. 18 won first prize in the piano division at the Geneva International Music Competition, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious such contests, its organizers said. The 23-year-old Hiroshima native became the first Japanese to win the top prize in the piano division at the famous competition, which started in 1939. According to the organizers, Hagiwara started playing the piano at age 5 and became the youngest champion at an international competition in Italy when she was a junior high school student.
