U.S. sinks tsunami ship off Alaska
|
|
The U.S. Coast Guard unleashed cannon fire April 5 at a Japanese vessel set adrift by last year's tsunami, ending the ship's long, lonely voyage across the Pacific Ocean. A coast guard cutter fired on the abandoned Ryou-Un Maru in the Gulf of Alaska more than 240 km from land. It sank in waters more than 305 meters deep. Officials decided to sink the ship rather than risk the chance of it running aground or endangering other vessels. (AP)
