National NewsActivists arrested after landing on SenkakusJapanese authorities Aug. 15 arrested 14 people aboard a vessel sent by a Hong Kong-based group seeking to assert China's claim to the Japanese-controlled Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea after seven of them landed on one of the isles. After the landing, Japan lodged a protest with China, with Vice Foreign Minister Kenichiro Sasae summoning Chinese Ambassador to Japan Cheng Yonghua to the Foreign Ministry in Tokyo. Cheng told Sasae that he hoped the current situation would not affect overall bilateral relations, according to Japanese officials. It was the first time since March 2004 that foreign activists have been arrested in connection with landing on the Senkakus in Okinawa Prefecture. In the previous incident, seven Chinese nationals were arrested. (Kyodo News)
