The Japanese Society of Snow and Ice has recognized three ice gorges in the Tateyama mountain range in Japan's Northern Alps as glaciers, the first found in the country, and will publish a paper on the ice floes in its journal in May, society members said April 4. It had been thought that glaciers in Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula were the southernmost ones in the Far East region. (Kyodo News)
