Iwate 'miracle pine' felled — for now

The city of Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, started work Sept. 12 on removing the tree that has come to be known as the "miracle pine" for a yen150 million preservation project. Once part of a large forest, the pine was the only tree still standing after last year's terrible tsunami. Its roots, however, were fatally exposed to seawater. The city plans to apply treatments to keep the wood from decaying before restoring it at its original site in the Takatamatsubara area in February as a symbol of the city's recovery efforts.
