The Diet on June 13 lowered the age of adulthood from 20 to 18 as part of a package of amendments that will have wide-ranging effects for the country’s 18- and 19-year-olds.
The new definition of adulthood will take effect on April 1, 2022. It means people aged 18 and 19 will be able to apply for loans and credit cards without parental consent. They will also be able to apply for a passport.
However, the minimum legal age for drinking, smoking and various forms of gambling will remain 20. (The Japan Times)
