A former bureaucrat beat a candidate supported by the ruling bloc led by the Liberal Democratic Party in the Saga gubernatorial contest Jan. 11.
Yoshinori Yamaguchi, 49, a former Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry official, won a close battle in a four-man race in the prefecture, securing 182,795 votes.
The election results came as another defeat for Abe’s ruling party after candidates supported by the LDP lost in the Okinawa and Shiga gubernatorial elections last year. (Kyodo)
