The Defense Ministry resumed March 12 an offshore boring survey in Okinawa Prefecture for the construction of a U.S. base replacement airfield, angering locals who have shown opposition to the plan in recent elections.
"This is utterly deplorable," said Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga, who became governor in December with a pledge to block the construction for the relocation of the U.S. Marine Corps' Futenma Air Station in Okinawa.
He told reporters in Tokyo he would use "every possible means" to stop the base. (Kyodo)
