Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni signed a controversial anti-gay bill Feb. 24 that has harsh penalties for homosexual sex.
The new law calls for first-time offenders to be sentenced to 14 years in jail. Consenting adults who engage in repeated gay sex face life imprisonment.
On signing the bill, Museveni accused Western countries of trying to "recruit" Ugandan children into homosexuality.
Ugandan gay groups denied this, and said Museveni was influenced by anti-gay conservative U.S. evangelicals. (AP)
