Brazil and the Netherlands recalled their ambassadors in Indonesia after the Southeast Asian nation ignored their pleas for clemency and executed six prisoners for drug offenses Jan. 18 ― the first executions under President Joko Widodo.
One Indonesian and five foreigners ― including those from Nigeria, Malawi and Vietnam ― were killed by a firing squad shortly after midnight, the attorney general’s office said.
Dutch Foreign Minister Bert Koenders called the execution “cruel and inhuman.” (Reuters)
