China faced the biggest challenge to its authority in Hong Kong as a rally that police counted at 98,600 people but organizers put at 510,000 marched July 1 to push for democracy.
For many of the protestors, Beijing is failing to respect the “one country, two systems” principle that allows Hong Kong to largely control itself ― including being able to vote for a leader in 2017. Beijing says it must OK any candidate for leader.
“They’re trying to tell us they have absolute power to rule us,” said protestor Jeff Kwok, 28. (AP)
