A British doctor accused of carrying out female genital mutilation (FGM) on a patient after she had given birth at a London hospital went on trial Jan. 19 in the country’s first FGM prosecution.
Prosecutor Kate Bex said the offence took place after Dhanuson Dharmasena delivered the woman’s child at Whittington Hospital, north London, on Nov. 24, 2012.
To aid birth, Dharmasena cut open the woman’s labia, which had fused when she had FGM at age 6, Bex said. He then stitched the labia together again, thereby performing FGM. (Reuters)
