The International Union for Conservation of Nature added Pacific bluefin tuna and American eel Nov. 17 to its new “Red List” of species at risk of extinction.
The Switzerland-based organization, known as the IUCN, said the species are at risk mainly because of overfishing aimed at the Japanese market. Japan is the world’s biggest consumer of tuna, and eel is also popular among Japanese consumers.
The list is not legally binding, but is a key reference used when deciding on international trade restrictions. (Kyodo)
