Osaka University Hospital said Nov. 24 it successfully transplanted the heart from a girl aged under 6 who was declared brain dead the previous day to a boy aged under 10.
The girl’s organs were harvested for transplantation following family consent, according to the Japan Organ Transplant Network.
“We succeeded in smoothly transplanting (her heart),” operating surgeon Yoshiki Sawa said at a press conference.
If the recipient boy does well, he can leave hospital in three to six months, the hospital said. (Kyodo)
