The Kyushu Expressway fully reopened April 29, in the latest sign of recovery from a series of powerful earthquakes that have rocked Kumamoto and Oita prefectures from April 14.
But the region still appears to be seismically active, with an earthquake of preliminary magnitude 4.5 jolting Oita on April 29.
"A lot of aftershocks will probably continue. We will take all possible measures to protect people's lives," Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told reporters during a visit to Kumamoto to assess the damage caused by two strong quakes in mid-April. (Kyodo)
