Education spending well below OECD average

Japan’s public spending on education ranked the second-lowest among 33 comparable countries, according to a new report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The report, released Sept. 17, covers 2013 data. It found that Japan spent 3.2 percent of its gross domestic product on education. The OECD average is 4.5 percent.

However, Japan’s total public and private funding per child was higher than the average, suggesting that households shoulder a high financial burden. (Kyodo)
