7 dead after Typhoon Lan makes landfall

Typhoon Lan blazed through Tokyo on the morning of Oct. 23 after making landfall along the coastline earlier in the day, leaving seven people dead as it pummeled Honshu with heavy rain and strong winds.

Mass transport was disrupted as the storm approached, with railways canceling or reducing morning train runs and airlines suspending flights.

Packing winds of up to 198 kph, the typhoon dumped around 800 mm in 48 hours in Wakayama Prefecture, the Meteorological Agency said. (Kyodo)
