Heritage listing puts Tomioka on tourist map

The Tomioka Silk Mill, a historic factory in Gunma Prefecture and a cradle of Japan’s industrialization in the 19th century, has been inundated with tourists following its listing June 21 as a World Heritage site.

More than 100 people braved the rain to wait for the building to open at 9 a.m. on June 22. It is the 18th property to make Japan’s World Cultural Heritage list.

“We’re looking forward to seeing what the factory looks like,” said 42-year-old Toru Hirosawa, from Shiroi in Chiba Prefecture. (Kyodo)

ユネスコの世界遺産委員会は６月21日、群馬県にある富岡製糸場を世界文化遺産に登録すると決定した。その翌日、多くの観光客が同製糸場に押し寄せた。
