Ex-army chief sworn in as Egypt's president

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi was sworn in as president of Egypt on June 8 in a ceremony in Cairo with low-key attendance by Western allies concerned by a crackdown on dissent since he ousted Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi last year.

The election in May, which officials said el-Sissi won with 97 percent of the vote, followed three years of upheaval.

At the ceremony, el-Sissi called for the development of freedom "in a responsible framework away from chaos," but did not mention democracy. (Reuters)
