Schoolgirls freed for Boko Haram leaders

Five Boko Haram commanders were released May 6 in exchange for the freedom of 82 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped three years ago by the extremist group, a Nigerian government official said the day after the swap.

The young women were flown May 7 by military helicopters from northeastern Nigeria to Abuja, the capital, where they were expected to be reunited with their families.

Some parents did not live long enough to see their daughters released, underscoring the tragedy of the three-year-long saga. (AP)
