24 dead in Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam: U.N.

Relief workers tried desperately March 17 to reach Vanuatu's remote outer islands that were smashed by a monster cyclone, as the United Nations reported that 24 people were confirmed dead and 3,300 displaced by the storm that tore through the South Pacific archipelago.

Officials struggled to determine the scale of devastation from Cyclone Pam, which tore through the nation early March 14, packing winds of 270 kph. Bridges were down outside Port Vila, making travel by vehicle impossible on the main island. (AP)
