Dream ends as Japan takes final bow from World Cup after 1-0 loss to Turkey

Japan's impressive run in the World Cup ended June 18 with a 1-0 loss to Turkey, but few could find fault with the way coach Philippe Troussier's squad performed throughout the tournament.

After a 2-2 draw with Belgium in its opening Group H match, Japan went on to defeat Russia and Tunisia, booking a spot in the second round and igniting a soccer frenzy as fans and an entire nation shared in the success.

"I think we changed the way people here feel about soccer," said defender Ryuzo Morioka. "The reception we got from our fans exceeded our own expectations."

"Sure we're disappointed with today's result but we're all satisfied with the way the team played throughout the tournament," added defender Tsuneyasu Miyamoto.

Heading into the tournament, Troussier insisted his goal was to reach the second round. Japan did that and more by winning its group.

Troussier, who was brought in to shake things up after Japan lost all three matches in its World Cup debut four years ago, had said he would step down as coach after the tournament. He said June 18 he was proud to have been a part of the journey.

Japan came close to leveling the score against Turkey when Brazilian-born midfielder Alessandro Santos hit the crossbar just before halftime.

But there were many positives to take home: midfielder Junichi Inamoto scored two goals, inspiring his team through the group stages. Hidetoshi Nakata and Shinji Ono, who play for Parma and Feyenoord respectively, confirmed their international class.

The team also displayed panache and a fast European-style pressing game.

Maybe next time people won't take Japan so lightly.
