The train crash in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, in 2005 could have been avoided if an advanced type of automatic train stop system had been installed, said West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) President Masao Yamazaki on Aug. 4. He also admitted that JR West suffered from "overconfidence," and had not considered installing the new system a priority. This is the first time JR West has offered an explanation for the accident, which killed 107 people and injured more than 560 others. (Kyodo)
