Dealers label Chinese eels as Japanese
Two seafood dealers sold grilled eels that were labeled as coming from Aichi Prefecture even though they had been farmed in China, sources said June 25.
Uohide and Shinko Gyorui put false labels on their products to get rid of Chinese eel inventories that had built up amid the recent scare about Chinese food imports.
Japanese eels are priced at two to three times that of Chinese eels. The eels had been labeled as coming from Isshiki, a town in Aichi Prefecture that is famous for its eels.(Kyodo News)
