China auto sales to surpass U.S.
Analysts announced Feb. 3 that despite a recent slowdown in car sales in China, the world's most populous country is expected to zoom past the United States and claim the spot as the No. 1 car market when January sales figures are made official. While car sales in China have slowed lately, they haven't plummeted like those in the U.S., where January sales tumbled 37 percent from a year ago to 656,976 vehicles, a 26-year low.
Meanwhile, sensitive footage of a protester shouting "dictator" and throwing a shoe at Premier Wen Jiabao at Britain's Cambridge University was shown on Chinese Central Television on Feb. 3, in a remarkable display of openness from state propaganda authorities. Incidents that could be seen as unflattering or insulting to the Chinese leadership have long been treated with the greatest sensitivity. (AP)
