Japanese women fell behind their Hong Kong counterparts in average life span in 2011 after holding the top spot for 26 straight years, owing to the large death toll from last year's disasters and an increase in suicides among young women.
The average life span for Japanese women in 2011 stood at 85.90 years, down 0.40 from a year earlier, while Hong Kong women topped the rankings at 86.70 years, according to a report July 26 by the health ministry. (Kyodo News)
