Pools inspect pipes after girl's death

SAITAMA (Kyodo) — Leisure facilities across the nation conducted emergency inspections Aug. 1, a day after a 7-year-old girl drowned at a popular municipal pool in Fujimino, Saitama Prefecture.

Erika Tomaru died after being sucked into an intake pipe whose protective grille had come off.
The circular pool, which has a streaming current that pulls swimmers around in a loop, is operated by Taiyo Kanzai under a contract with the Fujimino Municipal Government.
Toshio Saito, president of Taiyo Kanzai, said his firm subcontracted operation of the pool to another company and that he is now asking that firm how the pool was managed.
A Fujimino municipal official said the city did not know about that arrangement until Aug. 1.
Tomaru was sucked into the intake pipe head-first at around 1:40 p.m. on July 31, about 10 minutes after another child reported to the lifeguard that one of the grilles on the mouth of the pipe had fallen off.
The lifeguard contacted a senior lifeguard by radio, and another lifeguard came and told swimmers to stay away from the intake pipe. One lifeguard said he tried to warn Tomaru but she was underwater.
