Guinea-Bissau's president assassinated
|
|
The head of Guinea-Bissau's Parliament, Raimundo Pereira, took the oath of office as president March 3, a day after Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira, the man who ruled this tiny, coup-prone West African nation for two decades, was gunned down in front of his wife inside their villa. Vieira and his long-standing rival, the head of the armed forces, were assassinated in back-to-back attacks beginning March 1. First, a bomb hidden underneath a staircase killed the army chief inside his office. His inner circle pointed the finger at Vieira and hours later, the president was assassinated. (AP)
