Civil servants' bonuses rise 4.1%

The winter bonuses of rank-and-file civil servants averaged about 617,100 yen this year, up 4.1 percent from the previous year, as the Democratic Party of Japan-led government failed to make a dent in government wages. In an effort to enact a bill aimed at cutting bureaucrats' salaries by 7.8 percent, the government decided in October to ignore this year's National Personnel Authority proposal to trim wages by 0.23 percent. But the bill failed to clear the Diet's final session of the year Dec. 9. (Kyodo News)
