The causative is used when we are talking about something that somebody else does for us. We don’t do the action ourselves. Instead, we arrange for another person to do it for us.
Today, we’ll look at other uses of the causative using the verbs have and get. We’ll also look at how we can use the causative with the words make and let.
The structure have + person + verb is used to show you paid somebody or asked somebody to do something.
◆ I had my brother take me to the airport.
◆ My boss had me file the documents.
◆ We’re going to have my parents take care of our dog while we are on vacation.
The structure get + person + to + verb is used to show you encouraged somebody or persuaded somebody to do something.
◆ My friend got me to lend him some money.
◆ How can I get my kids to clean up their rooms?
The structure make + person + verb is used to show you forced or required somebody to do something.
◆ Our boss made us work overtime last night.
◆ If somebody makes a mess, you should make them clean it up.
The structure let + person + verb is used to show you allowed or gave permission to somebody to do something.
